A North Carolina community is in shock after a train accident took the lives of two children Wednesday night.
Police say an Amtrak train collided with a SUV in Durham shortly after 5 p.m.
They say the train was westbound when it struck a Ford Explorer sitting on the tracks.
Emergency crews say two boys, ages six and nine were thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Their mother was taken to Duke Hospital, and her injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
Witnesses say people rushed to the scene to help the victims.
Police say the car became stuck on the tracks when the railroad stop arms came down, blocking them in traffic.
Another car was stuck on the tracks but was able to get out.
