The chief of police released that video today after learning that a grand jury cleared the officers of any wrongdoing in that deadly shooting...which happened here in this south Kansas City park several months ago.
What you are about to see is a startling reminder of how dangerous the line of duty can be.
Dozens of shots from two veteran Kansas City officers...follow what seemed like a run of the mill fender bender...with nothing to warn the officers of what they are up against.
And though it seems routine - a car into a tree, with the driver walking off, officer eric turner decides to provide back-up...and follow the dispatched officer into Isler Park.
It's shortly after 730 on september 6th.
That first officer's dash-cam shows the short interaction, the man casually approaching, then calmly raising a handgun, pulling back its slide and firing.
Replay the same thing from the second officer's perspective, and you can see the first officer taking cover behind his patrol car door.
The second officer runs forward to assist, putting himself at risk, the suspect continuing to point a gun at them even after he had been shot and fallen to the ground.
The driver, 36-year-old Exae Chavez-Gutierrez, died in the exchange. The officers, with 40 years combined experience, survived without a single gunshot.
The chief of police commented today in his blog, saying, "I am releasing this video to show you the dangers KCPD officers face daily. We also are committed to being transparent. No officer ever wants to kill another human being, but as you can see in the video, sometimes they are left with no choice."
Police say may never know why the man fired his gun.
They say a tox screen showed marijuana and alcohol in his system, but nothing else to explain his behavior.
