New plans to improve the safety of downtown Greenville will start by educating the muscle at the bars.
Starting next year, the city will require all bouncers to take a class as a requirement.
This is one of a number of possible changes the city has been looking to make in light of recent violence in the downtown area.
Under the new regulations, bouncers will not only have to take a class taught by the police department but also have to get a criminal background check and will not be allowed to work if they have been convicted of certain crimes.
At tonight’s city council meeting, the motion passed and the new requirements will be starting May 1 to allow bar owners and bouncers to get up to speed on the new regulations.
At the start the training will be a single four hour course which the police department will offer monthly at no cost the bars.
Those background checks on the bouncers may not be free, who pays for that will be up to the bar owner.
City officials will revisit the new requirements six months from when they take affect and look at what progress has been made.
