RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A third North Carolina inmate is pressuring the courts to be set free from a "life" sentence defined as only 80 years long.
The case of convicted murderer Faye Brown is scheduled to go before a Wake County judge on Friday morning. She is among more than two dozen inmates who were prepared for release in October before Gov. Beverly Perdue kept them behind bars.
One inmate went to court in Shelby on the matter last week while a second appeared in a Goldsboro courtroom this week. Attorneys have debated whether the inmates qualify for sentence-reduction credits that would cut their sentences in half.
Superior Court Judge Ripley Rand is hearing two of the cases. He has vowed to expedite a decision.
