An Elizabeth City HC-130J Hercules aircraft crew took part in a dramatic rescue about 600 nautical miles east northeast of Bermuda.
It happened Sunday night.
The crew flew to the scene to locate a disabled French sailing yacht just after midnight. They provided communications and support for the rescue by the crewmembers of the Wellington Star.
Portsmouth Fifth District search and rescue coordinators guided the Wellington Star to the scene as the ship participates in the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System. AMVER ships broadcast their position so rescue coordinators can divert the best-suited ship or ships to respond.
