WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is planning to tell Senate Democrats that now is the time to come together and pass a sweeping health care bill that would dramatically reshape the nation's medical system.
The meeting Tuesday comes a day after Senate Democratic leaders suggested they were ready to abandon the last vestiges of a government-run insurance program that liberals have long sought. Scrapping the plan placates moderates and helps to secure the 60 votes Democrats need to overcome united GOP opposition.
White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said Tuesday that Obama will stress the need for unity.
