STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Federal prosecutors accuse a former North Carolina bank manager of stealing more than $270,000 from customers, including her own parents, to fund an online gambling addiction.
The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday prosecutors have charged 56-year-old Doris Stroud Renegar with embezzlement by a bank employee and identity theft.
She is accused of stealing customers' identities to take out loans, debiting customers' accounts, and taking $112,000 from her parents' certificates of deposit. She managed a Piedmont Bank branch in Statesville.
Prosecutors say Renegar stole the money between May 2007 and last June, when she was fired.
Her attorney Deke Falls says Renegar is sorry and has agreed to plead guilty. He says she let the gambling addiction control her.
