Friday morning Kinston Police arrested a former Principal of Bethel Christian Academy on charges of having sex with a student.
Police say Michael Fulcher turned himself into police around 8:30 this morning.
The arrest comes after a nine month investigation by Kinston Police and the SBI.
Fulcher faces multiple charges including indecent liberties with a student, sexual battery and crimes against nature.
According to the indictment it happened in March while he was still the principal of Bethel Christian academy in Kinston. He resigned the position that same month.
Friday morning, Kinston Police brought Michael Fulcher to the Lenoir county magistrate to be processed.
We waited outside to talk to him after he posted bail but later found out he took a back exit out to avoid the media.
The controversy started after Fulcher stepped down half way through the school year. At the time, interim principal Richard Barnard sent a letter to parents explaining Fulcher resigned after, "Confessing he had been using his cell phone to send inappropriate text messages."
We now know the girl at the center of today's arrest was the same one Fulcher sent those text messages to at the time of his resignation.
In March, the school said they were on good terms with Fulcher. We went back to Bethel Christian Academy after his arrest to talk to Barnard.
He declined an on camera interview but said he was unaware of alleged sexual misconduct and said the student never told the school of any problems past the inappropriate texts.
He said Fulcher's children still attend the school and they are still on good terms with the former principal but never condoned the text messages. Barnard said in the March letter
Fulcher "accepts full responsibility and blame for this failure in conduct."
According to the indictment, the alleged sexual misconduct happened on or around March 1st.
