We are in the peak of cold season this month and if you just can't get rid of those sniffles we have good news for you: the cure for the common cold may be just around the corner.
After three years of work, researchers from the University of Maryland and the University of Wisconsin - Madison say they have taken the first step in treating the cold.
It’s done by mapping the virus's genome, which would show how the different viral strains are related.
This would help drug companies develop treatments for the virus.
"Our mindset right now is to consider more along the anti-viral treatment, rather than vaccines, but always keep an open mind to the new technology of vaccine development,” said Dr. Stephen Liggett, who is with the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine.
Researchers are predicting the treatments will be developed in the next five years.
