CDC: Widespread Flu Activity in North Carolina

Dr. Keith Ramsey says even though we've had a mild flu season in the East so far, we're not in the clear. Flu season isn't over yet.

He says we should be concerned about the recent widespread flu activity across our state.
Ramsey says, "It just means you're more likely to come into contact with someone with influenza, so it's best to protect yourself, good hygiene, get your flu shot."

What To Do If Sick

Unlike last year, Ramsey says the vaccine is working well against the three flu strains going around. Still, some people, vaccinated or not, are getting sick.

Reporter: As far as treatment goes, Tamiflu is a common option, but Ramsey says he's finding some patients aren't responding to it.

Ramsey says, “This is the first season we've really seen a resistance to the Tamiflu and that's the drug most often used since 2000. One of the three strains are still susceptible to it but one is resistant and it just happens that one is the predominant strain in North Carolina this year."

So in some cases Ramsey and other physicians are prescribing medicine used nearly 20 years ago. Meanwhile, Ramsey says it's never too late to get your flu shot, because the bug will likely be around until early spring.

The Pitt County Health Department is offering the injection for free, but there is no more flu mist left at all. Be sure to check with your local health department or physicians to get vaccinated.
