Instead of just pinching pennies now it seems many of us are just down right nervous about losing our jobs. In tonight's Consumer Alert Nine On Your Side wants to warn you, some people are out to take advantage of job hunters.

Our Laura Vesco shares how one woman in the East knew a huge check and job offer were just to good to be true.

Brenda McLean says, "The first thing I saw was that check and I'm going thank you lord I got some money in the mail!"

After Brenda McLean's initial excitement she realized there was a catch to this $3,880 dollar check from Shoppers Market Research. "I was supposed to give them back the biggest part of this and send it to Western Union and send it to people I've never heard of before. They're all from New York."

In the letter, it asked Brenda to be a mystery shopper where she would just evaluate various stores for $300. A mystery shopper was also guaranteed an extra $100 to buy items which they could keep as a bonus.

I called the Shoppers Market Research number myself to ask some questions.
Reporter: "Why would she need to transfer money back to you?"

The person who answered the phone said he couldn't answer my questions and hung up. I then did a quick web check and called the attorney generals office who confirmed all of Brenda's suspicions.

Brenda says, "Just because you get a letter in the mail with a check in it don't pop and cash that check and think this is mine. Read into because it might be a scam."

Attorney General Roy Cooper is urging people to beware of scams such as this. Cooper says you should steer clear of job offers where you need to cash a check or transfer money through your bank account. He also says people can always check with the Better Business Bureau to find out a company’s track record.
