Keeping kids in school is tops in Raleigh today. State Speaker of the House Joe Hackney says lawmakers are committed to continuing the Dropout Prevention and Intervention Grant program. They've handed out $22 million in 140 grants since it started in 2007. Hackney, who formulated the program, says it's critical to continue.
"Still about every three out of ten students in North Carolina leave high school without a diploma and now more than ever they will need an education if they are to compete in these even more difficult economic times," Hackney said.
Hackney says he and others are given more efforts to the program, which could require more money.
