Some schools in the east are getting help to preserve their history. Lowe's Home Improvement awarded $1 million to the National Trust for Historic Preservation to restore 15 Rosenwald schools, two here in the east. Officials will repair the Alligator Rosenwald School in Columbia to use as a community center. And in Snow Hill, they're adding an adult literacy center to the Greene County Training Center, which now serves as a textile factory. Julius Rosenwald and Booker T Washington created the rural school building program in 1912 but many of the schools closed after the Brown vs Board of Education decision. For more information on Rosenwald schools, just type in the keyword: Rosenwald.
