---Update---

Some students around here today got their marching orders to kick off an international robot competition.

Students, teachers, mentors and local sponsors of the Pitt Pirates Robotics team got their instructions this morning.

They got the details for this year’s project by satellite through NASA.

Today's meeting took place at the South Central High School Library.

The Pitt Pirates team will have six weeks to design and build a robot.

After that, the team will go to Virginia in March for a regional competition.

A local high school will be hosting the FIRST Robotics Competition kickoff along with 42,000 other students from around the world.

It may be called “FIRST,” but this is the second consecutive year South Central High School has hosted the FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition kickoff coming up this Saturday, Jan. 3rd.

Pitt County’s only FIRST Robotics Team, the Pitt Pirates, along with teachers, mentors, and local sponsors will be kicking off the competition in the high school’s Media Center at 10:00 a.m. by watching a live broadcast held via satellite by NASA from FIRST headquarters in Manchester, NH. 45 other schools, including over 42,000 students, from around the world will also witness the competition’s kickoff via satellite.

During NASA’s feed, students will be informed of the criteria for building their robot, and will have six-weeks to design and build their robot for competition.
In March, the Pitt Pirate’s robot, named Virginia, will compete at the FIRST NASA/VCU Regional Competition and hopefully move on to compete against high schools from all across the U.S., Canada, and Europe at the FIRST National Competition in April.

The public is invited to the kickoff this Saturday, Jan. 3rd, at 10:00 a.m. in the South Central High School Media Center.
