A four-day search ended on Saturday with an arrest in a deadly double shooting in downtown Greenville.
Police say it ended earlier in the evening when James Richardson gave himself up to authorities.
Greenville Police Chief William Anderson says Richardson surrendered to police at his grandmother's house around 5 p.m.
"We’re very pleased with the level of cooperation that we received and we're very pleased to have taken this dangerous individual off of our streets," Chief Anderson said.
Richardson’s surrender ends a four-day search for the man police say shot into a crowd and killed two people outside a nightclub early Tuesday morning.
Anderson says the suspect left the state and went to Maryland after the shooting for at least part of the time.
He says a variety of law enforcement agencies and the community helped put Richardson in jail.
City Councilwoman Rose Glover spoke to the suspect's mother who she says helped convince her son to surrender.
"She did the right thing in talking to him to come and turn himself in. So, he's now in the custody of the police department and we'll just let them do their work," said Glover.
Anderson says Richardson’s charged with two counts of murder and has been transferred to the Pitt County Detention Center where he sits without bond.
He says the other people with Richardson the night of the shooting are not the focus of this investigation.
