RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina judge says he will rule Friday if the state's elected schools superintendent should regain powers lost when Gov. Beverly Perdue named a separate CEO to make education decisions.
The Wake County Superior Court judge heard arguments Wednesday in the case that could put Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson back in charge of running day-to-day operation of public schools.
A 1995 law gave the state school board flexibility to shape the superintendent's job, and the power of the post since then has depended on who held the job. Perdue put former Cumberland County schools superintendent Bill Harrison in charge of the public schools that teach about 1.5 million students.
