It may seem like a big city bad business but leaders say human trafficking is a problem right here in our state. Each year, as many as 800,000 people are smuggled across international borders. The Salvation Army and Triad Ladder of Hope in Greensboro are looking to educate people in our state on how to identify the problem. The groups hope to put a stop to it here.
"We want the average citizen that's out there and maybe hearing this for the first time and they're thinking 'there's human trafficking still exists in the triad in North Carolina?' So what we've done is created lots of community programs in the community to get involved in the fight," Danielle Mitchell with the Triad Ladder of Hope said.
The groups say sex trafficking victims can be found in the sex industry, hotels, nannies, restaurants, farming and landscaping.
