Thursday the Salvation Army posthumously awarded former Greenville mayor Les Garner with its "Other Award," one of the highest honors given to a non-Salvation Army employee.

Garner was a board member for the army for 45 years.

He was also honored with a documentary about the first "Golden K" club, a group for older Kiwanis members.

Garner founded the first club in Greenville. Now, there are more than 500 around the world.

"There are thousands of retired men and women serving their community through Golden K,” said Griff Garner, Les’ son. “That film typified that service and the fellowship they enjoy."

Garner died in February.
