It's a proposed measure that could give more students in our state an opportunity to attend state-supported colleges but could prove problematic for sports teams. A house education sub-committee approved legislation that would require UNC schools to count out-of-state athletes in admissions quotas. Only 18 percent of students in each freshman class are allowed to be out-of-state. The current law allows out-of-state athletes to count as in-state students. That costs taxpayers $7 Million a year. Representatives say making the change would preserve admission slots for students here. But, it could make it harder for teams to get out of state athletes on their rosters.
