RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A judge has ordered a hearing next month to find out how the state intends to improve schools in Halifax County, which he says are committing "academic genocide."

WRAL-TV reported Wednesday that Superior Court Judge Howard Manning ordered that a hearing be held April 29 on the state of schools in the northeastern North Carolina county.

He says the hearing will focus on what steps the state intends to take to fix Halifax County schools, which he said do not provide students there with "the equal opportunity to provide a sound basic education."

Spokeswoman Vanessa Jeter of the state Department of Public Instruction would say only that DPI will attend the hearing.

A spokesman for Halifax County schools said the system is taking corrective measures
