COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State officials say South Carolina is quickly becoming a leader in hydrogen fuel technology.
A national conference on hydrogen technology opens Monday and is expected to bring about 1,000 researchers, entrepreneurs and others to Columbia. The state's first hydrogen fueling station also will open Monday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell said the state is leading the way in developing hydrogen into the nation's next viable energy source. He said the hydrogen fueling station in Columbia could represent the gas stations of tomorrow.
The station's first customer will be the Federal Transportation Administration's National Fuel Cell Bus Program. It is providing a fuel cell-powered bus for demonstration in Columbia.
