Pitt County Schools revising student uniform policy

School district says uniform policy is here to stay, but parents and students can debate what uniforms should be

The Pitt County Board of Education has some possible changes in store for how kids dress at school. They plan to change the "school uniform and appearance policy" which has only been in effect for one school year with the help of parents and students.
On Monday, Pitt County Schools held their first public hearing on revising the current uniform policy.
The school district says the uniform policy is here to stay, but parents and students can debate what the uniforms should be.
Some parents want to increase the number of district colors from one to three; in addition to two school color options, which would give students more shirt options to choose from. Another idea, let principals authorize spirit wear, like letter jackets.
But the district is also weighing removing items like wind breakers and black denim jeans.
"You're spending money for your children to have clothes,” said parent Mable Stainback. “Your just going to have to keep those in the closet because you can't wear them to school."
School system spokesperson Heather Mayo tells Nine On Your Side, they hope to have the new policy in place before June 9th, the last day of school.
To see the proposed changes, type in the keyword: uniform.
