WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - One of North Carolina's port cities will celebrate Maritime Day with a wreathlaying ceremony.
The ceremony in downtown Wilmington on Wednesday recognizes the role the U.S. Merchant Marine plays in national security and strengthening the economy. Established by Congress in 1933, Maritime Day also honors the memory of Merchant Mariners killed serving their country.
More than 9,500 Merchant Mariners died out of the 243,000 who served in World War II, making it the highest casualty rate of all the U.S. services.
