WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House says there's plenty of time for the Senate to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor (soh-toh-my-YOR') to the Supreme Court before it takes its summer break.
The president wants Sotomayor confirmed as the first Hispanic on the high court by early August so she can join the other justices in deciding what cases will be heard in the next term.
While Republicans say they don't want to be rushed, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs points out that since the Senate has twice confirmed Sotomayor, she's not completely unknown.
Republicans have made clear they will ask Judge Sotomayor tough questions about her record and judicial philosophy.
The top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Jeff Sessions of Alabama, says the hearings will determine if Sotomayor understands that the proper role of a judge is as a neutral umpire of the law.
