RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Beverly Perdue wants changes to the state motor vehicle fleet because North Carolina government agencies have state vehicles in their parking lots.
WRAL-TV reported this week that state agencies have paid millions of dollars for miles they didn't drive on cars from the Motor Fleet Management Division. Agencies pay a monthly fee for cars that increases as the number of miles driven rise. They pay a flat fee even if a car isn't driven above a certain mileage.
The television station says the Department of Correction paid nearly $2 million for vehicles that weren't driven above the minimum mileage.
Perdue said Tuesday agencies could end up returning vehicles to the fleet or have employees share vehicles.
