RODANTHE, N.C. (AP) - A portion of the two-lane highway on North Carolina's Outer Banks is closed temporarily because of ocean overwash, and officials say it will be closed intermittently.
The stretch of N.C. 12 closed on Hatteras Island is north of Rodanthe.
In addition, state officials say stormy weather led the N.C. Ferry Division to suspend its Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach and Currituck routes.
State officials say the closings are due to rainfall from remnants of Tropical Storm Ida and a nor'easter. On Wednesday, two people on a disabled sailboat off the North Carolina coast were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, while two others are being towed to shore with the boat.
The storm has brought heavy rains and high winds and led to power outages in eastern North Carolina.
