You might recall Chief Meteorologist David Sawyer was live last week in a church that is helping to make dreams come true. Now, they have a lot of money to work with.
Southwood Memorial Church in Kinston raised more than 33 thousand dollars in just one weekend!
Sawyer got a first hand look at how the church is building the community around it.
It's a yard sale, a bake sale, a "nearly-new" sale, a giant auction and all the food you can imagine.
All of this and more in one place, at Southwood Memorial Christian Church's 41st Annual Harvest Festival.
Even with all the attractions at the church, organizers say there's more to it than bringing in hundreds of people.
"This is all for our community. It's not just for Southwood Memorial Christian Church. This family life center being built. It was built for our community," says Wendy Robinson, co-chair of the Harvest Festival.
Co-chair Susan Baker agrees, “I don't think there is a single church member regardless of how regular they come or how old. Well, I'm old too, but regardless of their age, they participate!"
And while the festival is a fundraiser for the church, it's really about giving back to the community.
"We really try to work for local missions as much as we can and we usually raise somewhere between 30 to 36 thousand dollars in one day. It's all about sending it out there to help others," says Rick Vernon, Senior Pastor of Southwood Memorial Christian Church.
