ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) - Officials in a coastal North Carolina county have declared a state of emergency after a nor'easter eroded oceanfront dunes and flooded several homes and cropland.
The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported that Currituck County Board of Commissioners Chairman Owen Etheridge made the formal declaration on Wednesday.
Etheridge said the decision was based on officials' desire to have inspectors from the Federal Emergency Management Agency visit the county and investigate the damage.
Currituck Emergency Management interim director Mary Beth Newns said entire beach areas in coastal Currituck are in need of repair. In some places, she said oceanfront dunes have been eroded by up to 30 feet.
During the storm, aided by remnants of Tropical Storm Ida, the northeast and the Outer Banks received six to 10 inches of rain.
