A state trooper responding to a traffic accident Thursday afternoon wound up going to the hospital after coming under attack. Trooper Amanda Signs responded to a call along Joe Stocks Road in Pitt County off Highway 43.
Highway patrol says a woman tried to park her Humvee in her driveway; and a pickup truck driven by Robert Atocks tried to pass her and hit the Humvee.
Investigators say he tried to flee, but Trooper Signs stopped him.
They say he resisted arrest and punched Figns six times in the face.
A good Samaritan saw the fight and hit stocks with a board. Neighbors like Betsy Jones were surprised, “Everyone was covered in blood. The officer was in blood...and I called 911 and I'm like you've got a state trooper in trouble. She needs help now."
Stocks is in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $200,000 bond.
Charges include DWI, resisting arrest and felony assault on an officer.
Signs suffered a broken nose as well as cuts to her face and head.
She was treated and released at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
