FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina death row inmate has received the Purple Heart he earned in Vietnam over 40 years ago but was never given.
The Fayetteville Observer reported Saturday that 62-year-old James Davis was given the medal in a simple ceremony in prison in July.
A Fayetteville therapist helping with Davis' appeal realized his fellow Vietnam vet still carried a chunk of metal from an injury suffered in the Tet Offensive.
Jim Johnson says Davis deserves to be honored for his service to the country no matter what else happened in his life.
Davis is on death row for killing two of his bosses and another person after he was fired from an Asheville tool company in 1995.
Davis did not get to keep the medal after it was pinned to his chest.
