Ten years after the most costly storm to hit the east, a Lenoir County man is being recognized for his service.
On Saturday, Lenoir County Emergency Management Director, Roger Dail will be honored as the Red Cross 2009 Hero of the Year.
In this week’s Community Builders, we talk to Dail about Hurricane Floyd, the rescue efforts and what he thinks about the flood a decade later.
Ten years later, Roger Dail can crack a smile when he looks back on Floyd.
But he says it's still hard to describe how bad things were when it hit.
There is a sign along the banks of the Neuse River marking where water levels rose during Floyd in 99 and Fran in 96.
When dale looks back on Floyd he says the one thing that stick out in his mind is the enormity of the situation.
Now it is Dale who is humbled to be receiving the honor of "Hero of the Year" by the Red Cross for service to his community when they needed him most.
Judy White was one of many to help in the rescue efforts with Dale during Floyd.
But looking back, both dale and white agree that some good came out of it and it was the character and will of the community to get back to normal.
And it's that will that they say has carried through to 2009.
