WASHINGTON (AP) - Some health care overhaul legislation is undergoing a revamp of its own in the Senate.
Officials say the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee is planning to commit an additional $50 billion over a decade toward the effort. They say much of that spending would make government insurance subsidies more generous, allowing families with incomes as high as 400 percent of the poverty level to get access to government money.
It's one of several changes Sen. Max Baucus is expected to reveal as his committee tackles the sweeping health care legislation.
As he opened the discussion, Baucus set out to pre-empt some Republican attacks, making clear the bill doesn't include a public health insurance option and that there would be no employer mandate.
Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, however, calls the legislation a "stunning assault on our liberty."
The Finance Committee is the last of five panels to have a say before the full Senate debates legislation.
