Financial Literacy in North Carolina's Public Schools

»  Comments | Post a Comment

GREENVILLE, NC - Today's teens are more technologically savvy. Now, thanks to a $10,000 grant earned by three teachers, teens are more financially literate.
“Middle school and high school are critical times for students, says State Treasurer Janet Cowell.
Governor Bev Perdue declared April “Financial Literacy for Youth Month”. State Superintendent June Atkinson and State Treasurer Janet Cowell are spreading the message.
“This skill is just as important as english, math, and science,” says State Superintendent June Atkinson.
From putting money in and watching stock values rise and fall in the stock market game to life events, Rose High students experience bad credit and living on an entry-level salary in financial literacy courses. Only three states in the nation offer financial literacy classes to all students. North Carolina is one of seventeen states that offer a technical program to some students, but Social Studies programs are being revised.
“By this fall we will have a draft that will show greater attention to financial literacy concepts in our curriculum,” says Atkinson.
The resources are available. The funding is not. For now the state school board is forging ahead.
“We want every student that graduates from high school or college in North Carolina to have a bright future not restricted by bad credit and past financial mistakes,” says Cowell.
Grant money for the Financial Literacy course will run out at the end of this school year. It costs about $12 per student to play the stock market game. The State Board of Education and its partners are looking for ways to continue the program.
