DUPLIN, NC - Beverly Knowles' murder comes at a time when the Attorney General's Office says the latest numbers from 2008 show domestic murders actually dropped in our state.
It's the 9-1-1 call no child should ever have to make.
Beulaville police chief Joey Clark says an autopsy revealed Beverley Knowles was actually shot twice and was dead before authorities arrived. Yet it's too early for investigators to know what lead up to the incident that also involved Knowles’ 14-year-old son.
"We have a lot more people to do interviews with and hopefully within the next few coming days we can maybe generate the pieces of the puzzle we don't have right now,” Clark said.
Chief Clark says his office never received calls of domestic disturbances from the home. And Carlus Langston never had a run in with local police.
Just last month, Attorney General Roy Cooper's Office addressed the problem of domestic abuse. In a statement he said, “Domestic violence victims deserve more help to protect themselves from abuse that too often turns deadly."
There were 100 domestic abuse murders in North Carolina last year. That’s a 23% drop from the year before---even still, Cooper is calling it a statewide problem that affects both rural and urban areas the same.
Langston’s next court date is May 7th.
