UNDATED (AP) - Amazon.com is giving in to publishing giant Macmillan and will sell electronic versions of its books even at prices it considers too high.
Books such as Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" and Andrew Young's "The Politician" were unavailable Saturday on Amazon.com, after Amazon pulled the titles because of Macmillan's new pricing model for e-books.
Macmillan and other publishers had criticized Amazon for charging just $9.99 for best-selling e-books on its Kindle e-reader. Publishers said such a low price could hurt sales of higher priced hardcovers.
But Amazon wanted to keep prices down and keep a dominant position against competitors such as Barnes & Noble, Sony and Apple.
Now, Amazon has agreed to price Macmillan's e-books from $12.99 to $14.99 when first released, and prices will change over time.
