90 minutes north of ground zero.. the Mayor of Newburgh, New York, Nicholas Valintine thinks his newly renovated local courthouse is the perfect place to try five 9/11 suspects.
Here in Newburgh… unemployment is around 20-percent… the courthouse still hasn't been paid for… and Mayor Valentine believes bringing the trials here will jump start the town's economy.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg initially supported a White House plan to hold the trials in Manhattan but changed his mind.. citing costs up to 2 billion dollars.. and security concerns.
Now, the Obama administration is reportedly offering 200-million dollars to help cover costs.
But at least one Newburgh business owner is not convinced the trials are worth the trouble.
A point echoed by Republicans who say the trials should be held on military bases.
But The administration remains confident Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.. and the others.. will be tried in the U.S.
Butcities from Pennsylvania to Virginia are asking not to participate … the White House may be forced to take a hard look.. at a small town option.
