It was caught on tape… dozens of people swarming a Vallejo maintenance worker as he was beaten on Monday afternoon near Vallejo High School.
The city employee, wearing a red shirt, was driving the backhoe seen on the upper right side of the screen.
After he gets out of the vehicle, he's knocked to the ground and surrounded by some 40 people.
Police say he was beaten severely and robbed of his wallet afterward.
This video from a passerby's cell phone camera shows the worker slumped against a fence after the attack.
Police say he was initially driving back to the city yard, when a teenaged boy threw a rock at the backhoe.
The worker turned around to confront the teen and was attacked.
This happened at about 3:30 Monday afternoon… just after Vallejo High let students out for the day.
Kamal Sandhu owns the Mini Mart where cameras caught the incident on tape.
He says he calls police 2 or 3 times a day for help controlling the crowds.
Police say it's unknown if the attackers go to the school… but many students witnessed the assault.
Detectives are using the tapes to identify anyone who can give them information.
