Japan's coast guards filmed a large smoke explosion 1,300 kilometers (about 800 miles) south of Tokyo that is believed to be an active underwater volcano on Wednesday (February 3).
The volcano, called Fukutoku-Okanoba, is located 5 kilometers northeast of the island of South Iwo Jima and is part of the volcano islets in the Bonin islands of Japan.
According to Japan's meteorological agency, the undersea volcano was first recorded in 1904 and has since erupted seven additional times.
Three of the eruptions generated islands, although all of them then succumbed to the sea.
According to Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun, the crew reported that the smoke from this eruption reached approximately 100 meters (328 feet) with the surrounding ocean turning a tint of yellow-green.
