The NAACP made the announcement Thursday that the Department of Justice has joined the investigation about whether schools in Wayne County are segregated.

The Department of Education is also looking at the case.

The NAACP filed a lawsuit claiming the Wayne County School Board's practices and policies have led to segregated schools.

“This demand has never been more pertinent, as we are experiencing a dangerous drift toward public school re-segregation,” said William Barber, with the NAACP North Carolina chapter.

The NAACP and its partners will march February 13 in support of school diversity and other issues.
