Investigators are looking into the death of a mental health patient, who was being cared for at Cherry Hospital.
The State Department of Health and Human Services is investigating the death of 80-year-old Lawrence Russell Jr. Officials say Russell died last Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro. He was transported from Cherry Hospital to Wayne Memorial after choking on his food.
The day before Russell choked he was physically restrained by Cherry Hospital staff, according to a DHHS report. No complications were reported at the time of the restraint.
A similar incident caused problems for Cherry Hospital in recent years. The hospital lost funding following the death of a patient in April 2008.
