It's a special year-long birthday celebration for one of the state's oldest towns. New Bern is celebrating it's 300th anniversary.
As part of the festivities, some folks in New Bern took a special trip to the town's mother city, Bern, Switzerland.
While there's a stark contrast geographically, Nine On Your Side found out, there's a lot of similarities too.
Nestled in the foothills of the Swiss Alps lies the home of New Bern's mother city, Bern.
The Swiss relish their ties with New Bern.
In fact, in December, they invited 35 people to tour the city, as part of the birthday bash, to bring the two cities together for the event.
UNC-TV reporter Rob Holliday was able to take in the sights and document his trip for the public access station.
While there are major differences at first glance between the two cities like the terrain and climate, other obvious and unique things they had in common stood out.
One of the easiest similarities to spot, the bear flags.
The group hit up hot spots outside of Bern as well, including touring a cheese factory, eating fondue and riding through the Swiss Alps just after the season's first snowfall.
Later this year, those same people who hosted this group in Bern will make the trip across the water to New Bern.
Holliday says the 300th anniversary celebration of the city is important, whether you live in New Bern or not.
Now, you can see more of Rob's tour of "Bern", just type in the Keywords: Bern To New Bern.
And tune into On Your Side, In Your Hometown tonight at six o'clock, where Storm Team 9 Meteorologist Gannon Medwick will be live from Union Point Park in New Bern.
