CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Retiring University of North Carolina chief Erskine Bowles says his work is far from finished.
Bowles told the UNC Board of Governors on Friday of his decision to step down by the end of this year as president of the university, saying it was the right time to do so.
The former White House chief of staff under President Clinton began his job at UNC in 2006, vowing to keep tuition low. UNC officials on Friday approved a proposal for the General Assembly to consider that would increase tuition by an average of 5.2 percent, lower than a rate state lawmakers had mandated last year.
Bowles has led the system through a year of turmoil, supporting the firing of former first lady Mary Easley as a federal grand jury began investigating her hiring and promotion at North Carolina State University.
