PHOENIX (AP) - Conservative talk-radio host J.D. Hayworth has kicked off his campaign challenging Arizona Sen. John McCain.
Hayworth began his campaign Monday with a rally in Phoenix and is set to go on a three-day statewide tour.
The former congressman received a boost from a founder of an anti-illegal immigration group on Monday. Chris Simcox dropped out of the race and endorsed Hayworth.
The primary showdown between the two well-known Arizona Republicans promises to be the toughest re-election battle of McCain's career. Conservatives in Arizona have long been skeptical of McCain, in part, for his work with Democrats.
McCain held his own campaign event at nearly the same time in nearby Tempe, with more than two dozen Arizona mayors vowing to support him.
