PHILADELPHIA (AP) - This is definitely not the kind of homework these laptop computers were sent home for. A family in suburban Philadelphia has filed a federal lawsuit claiming that the Lower Merion School District used the webcams in school-issued laptops to spy on students at home. The suit says the school district can fire up the webcams remotely without the students' knowledge or permission - and that ability invades the privacy not only of the students, but also the parents. Some students have put tape on their laptop cameras and mics. School officials say the laptops have a "security feature" that can be used to track lost, stolen or missing computers - and that the device was deactivated yesterday. The school district also says it is committed to protecting the privacy of its students.
