CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Representative Sue Myrick is meeting Muslim constituents while declaring Islamic radicals are threatening to infiltrate mainstream groups.
The Charlotte Observer reported that Myrick planned to hold a long-promised town hall meeting Thursday night.
The Charlotte Republican serves on the House Intelligence Committee and says the risk of homegrown terrorism by American Muslims is increasing. Myrick says Islamic extremists are working their way into U.S. Muslim communities and infiltrating government institutions.
State Senator Larry Shaw says Myrick is becoming a hatemonger and her crusade has tinges of McCarthyism. The Fayetteville Democrat is national chairman for the Council of American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights group.
