What happens when you run over a mile, eat a dozen - count that - 12 Krispy Kreme donuts, and run back? Well, we all know what comes to mind but, you might be surprised to find that it's also for a good cause.
The second annual Krispy Kreme Challenge was held on 10th street in Greenville. It's not mandatory to eat 12 donuts. Some participants walked the race and only ate a few.
A diabetes event centered around donuts might seem ironic but organizer Annette Peery says it's a common misconception.
"A lot of people are saying, ’why would you be running and eating donuts for diabetes,’ and Type 1 diabetes is not related to obesity and physical inactivity, so Type 1 diabetes is auto immune disorder and the people no longer make insulin so they require insulin as a life support to live on so we want to find a cure so they no longer have to live on that life support,” said Peery.
"The race was great. I have Type 1 diabetes, so I really appreciate what this does and, it's a challenge, but it's a lot of fun and for a good cause. It was great,” said Curtis Consolvo, one of the runners who participated in the challenge.
The event is co-sponsored by Phi Sigma Pi Honors Fraternity which supplied over 30 volunteers to help with the event.
Proceeds from the race go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
