In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Wilmington officials recognized a civil rights movement that came much earlier in our nation's history.
They unveiled a kiosk honoring members of the Underground Railroad. Wilmington Mayor Pro-tem Earl Sheridan says not many people know the city's role in the struggle to free the slaves.
"This will be quite educational for citizens of Wilmington, for many of our young people,” said Sheridan.
Descendants of William Gould participated in the ceremony. Gould and about 20 others joined the Union Army to help free slaves in North Carolina.
