RALEIGH – Gov. Bev Perdue requested today that Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton sign an executive order to temporarily suspend motor carrier regulations so that transporters of essential fuels and utility services in North Carolina can operate above the maximum hours.
The uninterrupted supply of fuel oil, diesel oil, gasoline, kerosene, propane, and liquid petroleum gas to residential and commercial establishments is essential during wintertime and any interruption in the delivery of those fuels threatens the public welfare. Also, the prompt restoration of utility services to citizens is essential to their safety and well-being.
In addition to the maximum hours waiver, Executive Order No. 46 waives certain size and weight restrictions and penalties for vehicles transporting equipment and supplies for the restoration of utility services along North Carolina roadways to impacted counties.
Upon request by law enforcement officers, exempted vehicles must produce documentation sufficient to establish their loads are being used for relief efforts associated with the cold weather and winter storm. The North Carolina Highway Patrol will enforce the executive order in a manner which will implement this rule without endangering motorist in North Carolina.
