Greenville, N.C. - Business Week posted an article on their website ranking 20 American states.

North Carolina didn't win first, second, or third.  We're fourth, but we probably don't even want to be that.

"I just wish I knew where those lazy people are so I could put them to work," said Tina Boyce, North Carolinian.

Business Week used surveys to track how people spend their time.

They found North Carolina ranked just behind Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas for most leisure pastimes or, in other words, “America’s Laziest States 2010”

"Maybe southerners just know how to enjoy their time off a little bit more and other people see that and take it as laziness," said Gina Briley, North Carolinian.

The article on business week's website says that on average, we North Carolinians sit down and watch TV for almost three hours and, after that, we get up and go to bed.  We stay there for at least eight and a half hours.

At work, North Carolinians spend on average three and a half hours.

"I feel like I see a lot of people around here working.  I work all the time,” said Kenneth Shelton.

The numbers include people who don't have jobs which would explain the low average work hours.

Stephanie Hart with Pitt County Public Health says other numbers could be misleading.

"What we know is roughly about half are reporting that they meet the physical activity recommendations.  They are exercising about 30 minutes, five days a week, or at least most days a week," said Hart.

In fact, rural communities like those in the east have fewer parks, sidewalks and bike paths which could have changed the outcome, but Business Week did not include that.

Business Week used five years of data from the American Time Use Survey

The least lazy state they found - New Hampshire.
