ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. - Officials with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office say they've located one of their K-9's at a local animal hospital.
It happened Tuesday.
They found "Dan," a male German Shepard, 8 years old dead at the Roanoke Animal Hospital in Roanoke Rapids. "Dan" was certified as an explosive detetion K-9 and had worked with the Sheriff's Office for about 8 years. He'd worked with his partner, Corporal Mike Almendarez, for 5 years. K-9 Dan received perfect scores every time he went for recertification.
Authorities say Almendarez discovered someone had let Dan out of his home kennel on Monday. A search of the surrounding area failed to locate K-9 Dan. Tuesday, the Sheriff's Office learned a local had discovered a deceased dog under his carport and transported the animal to the Roanoke Animal Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.
Almendarez and another officer went to the hospital and identified the dog as "Dan". The cause of death according to the Vet was blunt force trauma possibly from a vehicle.
A statement from the Sheriff's Office says, “Dan “ will be missed by all at the Sheriff’s Office. “Rest In Peace”. They'd also like to thank Mr. Thomas who cared enough to take Dan to the hospital and to the Roanoke Animal Hospital and their staff.
A memorial service For "Dan" will be held on Friday July 31st at Hockaday Funeral Home at 10:00am.
